Quickly master both Hiragana AND Katakana in one app. Purchase once and learn on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad for no extra charge.

Ever wanted to learn Japanese but didnt know where to begin? Learning hiragana first is often suggested by Japanese teachers and many textbooks (Genki, Japanese for Busy People Kana version, etc) virtually require it. This app will help you master both syllabaries* quickly and painlessly.

This app has over 250 sound files featuring all the main hiragana and katakana characters (we will be adding all of the combination characters soon as a free update!) and about 150 example words using characters learned.

- Universal app: iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
- Learn using Study cards with all information on a single card or with Flashcards to flip to see answers
- Quiz yourself after studying each section and review any missed answers
- Search all hiragana, katakana, and example words
- Random function: tap if you are feeling lucky -- great for reviewing all hiragana and katakana
- Lessons -- an additional way to study all hiragana and katakana
- (on iPad) view random hiragana on the front page

If you are sure you want to learn Japanese, you may want to grab our "Japanese Phrases & Lessons" app instead (or you can click on our "TheJapanesePage.com" link at the top to see all our apps). This includes most (but not all) of what is here for hiragana and katakana AND also includes kanji and grammar lessons plus almost 3,000 sound files of common words and phrases.

If you have ANY questions or comments, please dont hesitate to contact us.

* Although often called "alphabets," Hiragana and Katakana are more properly called "syllabaries" since each character more or less represents a syllable.

Pros and cons of Hiragana and Katakana-Japanese app for iPhone and iPad

Hiragana and Katakana-Japanese app good for

Its great easy to learn perfect for beginners or for reminders ^^
Letters A E I O U not written in alphabetical order in the hiragana grid, makes it more difficult to memorise, as well as the side letters. But helpful and fun app!
Only possible increment would be how to properly write each symbol.
Very didactic, good step-by-step guides, as well as simple vocabulary tips to help you learn! You can really feel the progress! I would recommend this to anyone who has to learn Japanese.
This great app will offer abundant hints and intuitive use. I am now officially infected with learning Japanese.
I tried many different things to get started studying Japanese. I bought books and downloaded plenty of apps but always felt overwhelmed and didnt know where to start. This app is absolutely genius because it breaks everything down into small chunks, you get the correct writing, pronunciation and sample words. The quizzes and study cards are a great way to repeat what you learned, practice reading and let everything sink in properly. Id totally recommend this app!

Some bad moments

This app is almost identical to their other app called Hiragana & Katakana - Japanese Basics. The difference is this one is free with in-app paid ad removal, which doesnt really work. Removing the ad leaves a white bar and blocks the bottom content because of it. The other app is the same price but has better design and no ads. Update: Im discovering more and more errors and misinformation, like incorrect pictures and Pronunciation. Get a second opinion before commiting to what you learn here.
This is a very useful app for learning and reviewing! It has pronouncing, stroke order and quizzes!
This app has helped me learned very quickly. It allows you to take in as much information as you want for the day. Its very useful, helpful informative and kind of addictive. I do however have tips to make this app better. 1. The auto button plays the list of words through only once. Its quite a hassle for someone to go back and click on the list again only to do the same thing. There should be a repeat button. 2. The study cards should have a skip to (arrow) button so the user of the app doesnt have to click out of the card and click on the next one. It would be more efficient and make the app easier to use. 3. Make the individual hiragana and katakana letters bigger. The bigger the letters are the easier they are to read. This will allow people with limited eye sight to see more detail and it just makes the letters easier to remember.
I do really like this app, my only complaint is that when the "rate this app" window pops up it crashes if I press the "yes, rate this app" option.
This app is great! I wont lie at first I was a bit confused on how to work it but once I got a system in place its been a great study method and way to learn a couple of random words before getting deeper into the language.
This app does a very good job to quiz you on your hirigana, and keeps the information in your head. I would recommend this app to anyone who is wishing to learn ひりがな. It is so useful.
